Glass Jar Cozies

By Karina | May 5, 2010

teajar.jpgI love this post, because it reminds me of Jenn, who I heart. Heart! I know that she had transitioned to using a trusty glass jar fished out of her recycling bin as her daily water (and hot tea) container a while ago - you know ala no impact man and HIS drinking jar - of course this post about COZIES for jars should be right up her alley.

So Marisa (who did a survey here) of FoodInJars.com has a lot of canning jars lying around. And because I love canning (really love it) I of course love reading her blog, and was thrilled to see this recent post about canning jar cozies! As Marisa says:

For years now, I’ve been in the habit of using jars as to-go containers. On days when I make a smoothie for breakfast, I tote it to work in one of my precious 24 ouncers (please Jarden Home Brands, bring back the 1 1/2 pint wide mouth jar). I frequently eat a yogurt, granola and jam concoction out of a wide mouth pint. And when I don’t have a traditional travel mug handy, I pour my coffee into a jar.

During warmer months, I’m strictly an iced coffee girl (see below!). I use the cold brew method, which results in a smooth, nuanced cup. However, in the winter I like my coffee toasty. And while the jar can handle the heat, my fingers can’t always. Enter the jar cozy!

Be sure to click through so you can see the charming jar cozy, and she has a follow up post with even MORE lovely cozies! And as an added bonus that first post has information about how Marisa makes cold brewed coffee - we have a post here all about it too, if you are into this coffee sort of thing, compare and contrast!

As a more personal note, I have fond memories of going out to cut down firewood with my mom and dad, and drinking iced tea out of mason jars off of the back of a pickup truck. Very fond, I think I’ll have to phase in more mason jar drinks into my daily life!

Do you cold brew coffee, or use a drinking jar?

Marisa is great! I’m so glad you posted about her love of jars. If I knew how to knit, I’d try to make those cozies - they’re adorable.

I haven’t cold brewed my coffee yet, but I use canning jars as drinking vessels like nothing else exists. I grew up in a household where drinking a gallon+ of tea every day (by each person) while working in the hayfield or clearing brush for fences mostly was commonplace. So was canning our own foods. And drinking glasses just could not hold enough to quench that kind of thirst; it was quart jars all around. Even now that I’ve graduated from college and don’t live at the farmhouse anymore, I still use the jars. I like them because of the way they feel in my hand, my memories of them growing up, their utter practicality and the fact that I don’t have to worry about keeping a matching set of expensive glassware from breaking.

I use old pickle jars (Ba-Tampte Half Sours) for cold brewing coffee. I love the flavor, though sometimes I end up with a little extra grit and I NEVER make enough.

I use a large canning jar or salsa jar to hold leftover coffee from the coffee maker. I use it for iced coffee.
