Easy Peasy Tip: Get Organized!

By tinychoices | October 25, 2008

organizedspace.jpgAs the seasons start to change and we take the opportunity to nestle into our homes and get comfortable, how about using this time to get organized as well? While you’re cleaning up, go ahead and figure out what you have around the home so you can use it. For example: if you have a hobby such as knitting or crochet, use an online organizational site such as Ravelry to keep track of all the yarn you have so you can use it up, instead of buying more. Go through your kitchen cabinets to refresh yourself of what you have hidden in the dark corners, and maybe bring a bag of food that just isn’t your speed to a local food pantry. As you go through your things try to repurpose idle items or give them away. Extreme case: maybe it will be a not-so-tiny lifestyle change and you can reassess your required living space!

I’m so glad you mentioned Ravelry! Though, looking at other people’s projects and yarns on there can sometimes just make you want more . . .

I always find that instead of getting the cleaning/organization bug in spring, I get it in the fall when the weather finally starts to cool down.

so, last weekend I went to sheep and wool in rheinbeck and the friday night before I went I stayed up late and did just this. and it was so LIBERATING! just knowing what I have makes me feel so much better about it! and it turns out I was able to get rid of about 1/3 of the stuff I had squirreled away, which makes me feel awesome.

I really need to pull all my yarn out of its box and fill it all in at Ravelry. I have most of the skeins bought recently, but not the really old stuff-the stuff I should be trying harder to use up.

Well, easy peasy is relative. I live in a 525 square foot apartment and I sometimes I feel that only about 50% of that is usable space because of all my crap! I fantasize about living in a much smaller space [say, 150 - 300 square feet] but I think it is really a way to dream about an uncluttered life. I agree that fall is a better ‘spring-cleaning’ time.

Your idea of making an inventory of what you have is an excellent first step. Even more than getting rid of crap, I need to stop bringing in crap [knitting is definitely a stuff-intensive hobby].
