Tiny Choices Survey: Randi!

By tinychoices | April 16, 2010

randi.jpgVital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
I’m Randi, 27 yo stay at home mom from WI. I blog at: randijc.blogspot.com

How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
I live with my little family of four, plus one dog and one occasional cat (he tends to wander the neighborhood..) in a single family home. We live in a tiny town, but are hoping to be able to move out in the country in the next few years and live almost completely self-sustaining!

Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
A little of both, I guess. We love the area where we live, but we chose this house five years ago, before we ever really thought about the environment around us. It’s a rather large house, and not laid out the best, so we probably pay more for some utilities than we really need to.

How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I own a Ford Fusion, and because we live 50 miles from anywhere, I have to drive there. We do walk about our tiny town when we need to go somewhere here, the PO, bank and library are all only a block away.

Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I’ve made a lot of them! I’ve quit buying so much stuff for one… I used to shop all the time and was always buying stuff that had tons of packaging! Incidentally, I hate children’s toys, they have so much garbage with them!! I shop with cloth bags, make most of our food from scratch, can a lot of it, and even bake my own bread!

What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
My scrapbooking… I love to scrapbook, but it uses so much paper! I try to save all the scraps to use them for something else, but sometimes that’s hard to do!

What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I have found my scrapbooking has evolved with my change of heart towards environment, I use less pre-packaged stuff and make more of my own!

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
Not buying plastic toys for my children. Some of my family don’t understand why I don’t want them to keep buying my girls junk toys, but when they break, where’s it going to end up? Taking 100 years to decompose in some landfill?…. My children don’t have the large amount of toys most kids do, but they don’t seem any less happy than other children!! :)

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Using cloth grocery bags!! If there were less plastic bags in this world, it would be a better place.

Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
No, I don’t feel the choices I make are sacrifice, because they’re the best thing for me and my family. And I love my family, so want the best for them!

Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
I would have to say neutral. Some days I’m optimistic and some not. I think the more awareness there is about the cause and effect, the more people will follow the “right” ways. :) The biggest thing that made me think about what is happening to our world, was my children. I wanted the best for them, and if I have to make “sacrifices” for their well-being, then so be it! I can take a few minutes longer to make a meal from scratch, instead of being pre-packaged, or I can take five seconds to grab my own grocery bags out of the trunk when I go grocery shopping.
