Easy Peasy Tip: Make your Dishwasher Most Efficient!
By tinychoices | June 18, 2011
While the lines are usually clearly drawn between those who think a dishwasher is the best-most-efficient or the worst-most-wasteful way to clean dishes, people usually decide to use whatever it is they have at home - the dishwasher, or their own two hands. As always, there’s usually a best way to use your appliances to keep them efficient.
If you’ve got a dishwasher at home, make sure you use it efficiently. Run it only when fully loaded, and don’t waste extra water by rinsing or pre-washing everything before putting it in. Make sure you use a good detergent that is biodegradable - it’ll save your local treatment plant some extra work! If you need an additive to deal with hard water, pick one that is natural. And most importantly, make sure that your dry cycle is shut off. Chances are your every day dishes won’t have a problem with water spots, and if you’re that concerned about it, make a point to pull dishes out of the washer as soon as it stops so you can dry them nicely before putting them away. It takes a little extra effort, but you’ll save tons of energy!
And if *you* are the dishwasher, take a look at these good tips on how to quickly and efficiently wash dishes by hand!

This, “. . . and don’t waste extra water by rinsing or pre-washing everything before putting it in.” made me laugh. If we don’t at least wipe off our dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, it does nothing. NOTHING! I think if it ever dies I’ll do the same as what my parents did when there washer gave up: turn in into extra pot storage.
